The Incredible Panhandlers Steel Drum Band
The steel drum band, affectionately named the Panhandlers, has become a beloved part of Brittany Pointe Estates. Under the direction of steel drum master David Gettes, residents gather weekly to practice and share their love of music.
"Dave agreed to come and offer a scaled-down beginner’s version of the steel drums to the residents here. He created these pans to suit the specifications of this age group. Before I knew it, I had a waiting list of people interested in learning," said Terry Alburger, the community’s former life engagement coordinator at the time.
The group was formed in 2019, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents began to learn their new instrument in virtual practice sessions, and despite these unforeseen challenges, their passion never wavered.
Beyond its ability to energize and unite a community, music also provides incredible health benefits—especially for older adults. Studies show that engaging in music can enhance brain function, boost memory, and even slow cognitive decline. Playing an instrument, like the steel drums, encourages hand-eye coordination, mental agility, and social interaction, all of which contribute to overall well-being. For Brittany Pointe residents, the steel drum band is more than just a musical group—it’s a fun and engaging way to stay sharp, active, and connected!
