The Stitching Bees at The Evergreens, a senior living community in Moorestown, NJ, are crafting with purpose and passion. This vibrant group of residents gathers every Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon to crochet and knit baby blankets, hats, and other handmade gifts for nonprofits like the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Project Night Night, and Virtua Health’s rainbow baby program.

Open to everyone, the Stitching Bees welcome both seasoned crafters and those looking to reconnect with their hobbies or simply enjoy the camaraderie. Residents don’t need to crochet or knit to join the fun; the community spirit is what truly matters.

“We love meeting here at The Evergreens because when prospective residents visit, they see a group full of life and support,” said Janet Kaplan, co-founder of the Stitching Bees told the Moorestown Sun. “It’s a relaxed, welcoming environment—you come if you feel like it.”

Even those who haven’t stitched in years find support and encouragement. “Newcomers sit down and say, ‘I haven’t crocheted or knitted in years,’ and everyone is happy to help,” said Elli DiCola, another co-founder.

The Stitching Bees contribute handmade items to several meaningful causes. Project Night Night provides essential packages to homeless children, each containing a security blanket, a children’s book, and a stuffed animal to promote comfort and literacy. Virtua Health’s rainbow baby program, led by RN Ann Coyle, supports families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, providing them with special keepsakes like rainbow-colored blankets.
