Steadily, she moves
on the walking path
a tall, lanky woman whose leggy strides support a sturdy pace
her posture familiar always she leans forward as if pushing against the wind
I hope she senses even from a social distance the energy in my eyes crinkles around the lids eyebrows that lift toward the forehead
She will not see the rise of the cheeks arc of the mouth curl of the lips into a genial smile as I say hello
Behind the mask animation unfolds what we cannot see separates us impairs interaction gives us permission not to respond at all
But today
I will lift my hand and wave because I cannot bear to pass my fellow traveler without a greeting
